Bergeron’s second CD, Plays Well With Others, released on the Concord Jazz label in 2007, was met with the same acclaim. Bergeron’s most current CD, Full Circle, was released in January of 2016. Bergeron feels this is his best work to date.  Bergeron performed as principal trumpet at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles from 1997-2017 playing on hundreds of musicals. Jimmy decided to move to California after being exposed to the rich range of social and musical opportunities that the United States has to offer. Terry Gibbs – Vibes

Performed with: Jazz Round Table #9 6/29/21Bio – Terry Gibbs began his career at the age of 12 after winning the Major Bowes Amateur Hour Contest and subsequently began touring professionally. He spent many years as a drummer and percussionist playing gigs until his affinity for bebop motivated him to turn down a scholarship to Julliard as a timpanist and return to the vibes. Six decades of inspirational vibe playing and technique, Gibbs is recognized as one of the best ever to grace the genre of bop. After World War II, Gibbs toured with Chubby Jackson, Buddy Rich and Woody Herman. He co-led a sextet with Louie Bellson and Charlie Shavers; and in 1950, he formed his own band for Mel Torme’s TV show. In 1951, he joined the Benny Goodman Sextet. Subsequently, he toured with his own quartet where he won acclaim as “# 1 Vibraphonist in the world,” in both the down beat and Metronome polls from 1950 to 1955. Gibbs also played a role in breaking down the sex barrier in music, using pianists Terry Pollard, who he often featured in vibe duos, Pat Moran, and Alice McLeod, who later married John Coltrane. Settling in Los Angeles in 1957, he formed his big band known as “The Dream Band” in 1959. Comprising top notch LA talent such as Mel Lewis, Joe Maini, Frank Rosolino, Conte Candoli and Richie Kamuca, the band was named “Best Band in the World” in the Downbeat ’62 Critic’s Poll. Gibbs returned to New York in the early sixties only to move back to LA to take a position as Music Director for the Regis Philbin Show. This gave him the opportunity to compose the music and conduct a sextet. He later served as Music Director/Composer for the ABC TV show, Operation Entertainment and for Steve Allen, building a substantial ASCAP rating. Gibbs also taught Steve Allen to play the vibes. Gibbs, throughout his illustrious career has enjoyed world acclaim playing with greats such as clarinetist Buddy DeFranco, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Horace Silver, Max Roach, Art Blakely, Elvin Jones and Tito Puente. Co-leading a quintet, he had an unprecedented nomination in four categories of the Playboy Jazz Poll: Best Vibraphonist, Best Quartet, Best Big Band and Best Band Leader. His association with DeFranco has spanned 18 years and is still an invigorating collaboration today. With 65 albums to his credit, winner of 3 major jazz polls and creator of 300+ compositions (recorded by Gibbs, Nat Cole, Les Brown, Cannonball Adderly, Count Basie, George Shearing, etc.), Gibbs has left an indelible mark in the world of vibes....MORE INFO!

Gordon Goodwin – Composer, Sax, Keyboards

Performed with: Jazz Round Table #7 6/1/21Bio – “Listening to Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, I was immediately taken by Gordon’s contemporary musical viewpoint, the dynamics of his “Big Phat Band,” its bevy of superb soloists, and the exhilaration of its sound.” —Quincy Jones “The Big Phat Band provides potent testimony to the sheer exhilaration of big band jazz…a combination of crisp accuracy and fiery soloing.” —Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times “Gordon Goodwin has extended the possibilities of all the different kinds of music (all good) that can be played by a big band. The magnificent Big Phat Band and its multi-talented leader, Gordon, stretch the envelope even further.” —Johnny Mandel “Trying to describe the towering talents of Gordon Goodwin is one of my most frustrating but little secret pleasures. He is a gifted and creative pianist, an explosive and ‘haul ass’, ‘kick butt,’ sax player, an arranger of absolutely no limit of musical styles and composer of some of the best (and cleverly titled) compositions ever. He is a man of exquisite musical taste. I am truly blessed to have him in my life.” —Johnny Mathis “Whenever I hear your music, I get the sudden urge to retire!” —Sammy Nestico Even for a successful composer and arranger in Hollywood, Gordon Goodwin’s numbers are impressive: A 2006 GRAMMY Award for his Instrumental Arrangement of “Incredits” from the Pixar film The Incredibles, three Emmy Awards, and thirteen GRAMMY nominations. Here’s another impressive number to add to the list: eighteen. As in the number of musicians in Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, one of the most exciting large jazz ensembles on the planet. Populated by L.A.’s finest players, the Big Phat Band takes the big band tradition into the new millennium with a contemporary, highly original sound featuring Goodwin’s witty, intricate, and hard-swinging compositions in a veritable grab bag of styles: swing, Latin, blues, classical, rock and more. A steady, persistent audio diet of the giants of jazz, pop, rock and funk has nourished Goodwin’s being since childhood. Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Tower of Power, among many others, filled the well for the music his band makes today. And like those other bands, Goodwin’s music is nothing less than astonishing when experienced live. Goodwin’s ability to combine jazz excellence with any musical style makes his writing appealing to fans across the spectrum. That’s why both beboppers and headbangers dig Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band. Established in 2000, the Big Phat Band’s debut recording, Swingin’ For The Fences (Silverline Records), featured guest artists Arturo Sandoval and Eddie Daniels. It made history as the first commercially available DVD-Audio title ever released and the first DVD-Audio title to receive two GRAMMY nominations. The band’s second album, XXL (Silverline Records), was released on DVD-Audio and compact disc in 2003. Charting its first week, XXL garnered three GRAMMY nominations for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album, Best Instrumental Composition (“Hunting Wabbits”) and Best Instrumental Arrangement with Vocals (“Comes Love” with Brian McKnight and Take 6), while winning the Surround Sound Award for “Best Made for Surround Sound Title.” The list of guest artists matched the high quality of the first release and featured, among others, Johnny Mathis and the incomparable Michael Brecker. The Big Phat Band’s third album, The Phat Pack (immergent Records), with guest stars Dianne Reeves, David Sanborn, Eddie Daniels and Take 6, received a GRAMMY nomination and spent 31 weeks on the Billboard jazz charts. Released in September 2008, the Big Phat Band’s fourth recording, Act Your Age, far outsold every other big band record in its path. Produced by acclaimed guitarist Lee Ritenour, it featured a host of terrific guests including Patti Austin, Chick Corea, Dave Grusin and even Ritenour himself, plus a special appearance by the late pianist Art Tatum on a stunning performance that had jaws dropping right and left. The critically acclaimed Act Your Age garnered three GRAMMY nominations. A keyboardist and woodwind player, Goodwin has built a larger-than-life reputation throughout the music industry for his composing, arranging and playing skills. Ray Charles, Christina Aguilera, Johnny Mathis, Toni Braxton, John Williams, Natalie Cole, David Foster, Sarah Vaughan, Mel Torme, Brian McKnight and Quincy Jones are just a few of the artists with whom he has worked. Goodwin has also conducted world-renowned symphony orchestras in Atlanta, Dallas, Utah, Seattle, Toronto and London. Goodwin’s cinematic scoring and orchestration craft can be heard on such films as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Escape to Witch Mountain, Get Smart, Glory Road, National Treasure, The Incredibles, Remember The Titans, Armageddon, The Majestic, Con Air, Gone In 60 Seconds, Enemy of the State, Star Trek Nemesis and even the classic cult film Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes. Goodwin’s soundtrack to Looney Tunes’ Bah HumDuck! – a wacky Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck riff on the classic A Christmas Carol – also features the Big Phat Band’s patented sound. Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band joins Telarc International, a division of Concord Music Group, with the April 12, 2011 release of That’s How We Roll. The band’s first CD in over two and a half years features 10 new Goodwin originals and the Gershwin classic “Rhapsody in Blue.” Special guests include Gerald Albright, Dave Koz, Marcus Miller and Take 6....MORE INFO!

Ron Jones – Composer, Piano

Performed with: Jazz Round Table #4 – 4/20/21Bio – For over 37 years, Ron Jones has dedicated himself to the art of craft of composing. Most of his creative work has involved scoring music for TV and Film projects, produced by both major Hollywood studios and independent productions companies. After getting his degree in music composition and music theory, Ron moved directly to Los Angeles, in order to study at the famous Dick Grove School of Music. What attracted Ron’s attention was that all the teachers were successful professional musicians, arrangers and composers who where actively involved in creating music for recording artist, TV and film and other real world music areas. Prior to graduation from Dick Groves, Ron started working as a composer for an NBC movie of the week and several network animated TV series, produced by Hanna-Barbera. Under the guidance and tutelage of Hanna-Barbera’s music director, Hoyt Curtin (Flintstones, Jetsons and many more), Ron scored hundreds of episodes of Hanna-Barbera’s popular animated series. Soon, Mr. Curtin called on Ron to arrange and eventually compose many of the main title themes, such as the Smurfs, Scooby-Doo, The Snorks and many more. After five years, Ron was introduced to the very busy composing team of Mike Post and Pete Carpenter. During his time scoring for Post and Carpenter, Ron worked on such popular series as The A-Team, Magnum P.I., Hardcastle and McCormick, Riptide, Hunter and more. This phase of scoring work involved a wide variety of scoring styles with emphasis on fusing contemporary Rock and Pop elements into the scores, a hallmark of the Post/Carpenter sound. While working with Post/Carpenter, Ron continued scoring many low budget features, which gave him the opportunity to hone and develop his long form skills. Chris Montan, head of Disney Music, happened to watch a session Ron was doing for an animated project. The score and how Ron crafted the cues impressed Chris. Chris asked what motivated this deeper level in the music. Ron replied, not knowing who Chris Montan was, that the main difference is that he respects the intelligence of the audience. Most composers at the time were playing down to the audience. Ron’s approach took into account that a large percentage of the animated audience is actually adults. Also, by designing the scores with respect for the intelligence of the audience, the shows themselves took on a broader appeal in that they were not patronizing. Soon after this random encounter, Chris Montan called and asked Ron to score the animated series, Duck Tales for Disney. Ron played the adventures of Huey, Louie, Dewey and Uncle Scrooge as a serious “Raiders of the Lost Ark” action/adventure show. This worked in a wonderful way against the comedy and with of the stories. Duck Tales has been one of the most successful animated series of all time and still plays to a large worldwide audience. After Duck Tales, Ron worked on the first four seasons of Paramount’s smash hit series, Star Trek: The Next Generation. Scoring Star Trek: The Next Generation offered a perfect opportunity for Ron to use all the skills acquired from the animation, live action series and independent features. Each episode was looked at like a separate feature, rather than a serial with repeated ideas. ST:TNG was really like a Wagneriansuper opera. Each episode had it’s own unique orchestral palette and themes. There were highly organized and compositionally developed themes and motifs, which related to the Star Fleet crew as well as the various life forms they encountered in their exploration of the universe. Ron further developed the Star Trek music in his scores for the groundbreaking computer games StarFleet Academy and StarFleet Command. These games were the first to use a full studio orchestra for the score. StarFleet Academy won the best score award from the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences. Ron continued his animation scoring by doing several animation shorts for upcoming creative Producers at Hanna-Barbera and Nickelodeon. Ron’s theme for Butch Hartman’s Fairly Oddparents series won BMI’s TV and Film award for being the most performed theme on Television for an amazing three years in a row (2002-2004). Ron also worked with one of the great young talents, Seth MacFarlane, with whom he had also scored some of his first projects for Hanna-Barbera. Seth took a chance and developed a new series for Fox, called Family Guy. Ron scored the pilot and the series has gone on to become a worldwide hit. Not only has Family Guy become hugely successful as both a first run and syndicated series, it has topped the charts in home DVD sales, out selling many of the top feature films. Also, Family Guy is one of the most popular iTunes downloads, usually in the top 10 weekly. Ron has been pushed to create nearly every possible musical style and genre of scoring during his years working on Family Guy. From Broadway parodies, jazz, pop, contemporary grooves and songs to serious orchestral underscore, which rival anything on TV and surpasses many feature scores. Ron also scored another of MacFarlane’s series, American Dad, which is also on Fox. Currently, Ron has expanded his musical exploration by forming the Influence Jazz Orchestra. The group is made up of the most elite session and jazz players in Los Angeles. This ensemble was formed out of a desire to share with live audiences the incredible and amazing studio musicians Ron calls to record his TV scores. Influence has performed at many of the top Jazz Clubs and concert venues to sold out audiences. The band performs new works by Ron, as well as the best charts written for Jazz Ensemble. Many performances feature Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy, singing his favorite classic Sinatra songs as arranged by Nelson Riddle, Billy May and more. Influence is involved in concerts of film and TV music as well as cutting edge Jazz. Ron Jones has taught and guest lectured in the US and Europe at colleges, University’s and Conferences. Ron is very interested in teaching and sharing his professional insights with the new generation of composers. Ron is driven to learn and grow, both with his music and in his life. He is proud of his accomplishments and the over 40,000 compositions he has created so far. He looks forward to the next level of creative challenges with excitement and eagerness. Ron owes everything to his wife, Laree, for all of her wonderful support and love. Ron is very proud of their son, Nathan, and look forward to all he will be and do in his life. When not scoring, Ron enjoys hiking in the mountains and landscape photography. Ron composes for orchestras, jazz groups, choirs, electronic, and a wide array of other music groups and styles with the goal of exploring the deeper side of music composition. He conducts all of his orchestral scoring sessions, the Influence Jazz Orchestra and he has guest-conducted orchestras in the U.S. and recentlywas a guest conductor for the Star Trek:The Ultimate Voyage concerts at Royal Albert Hall with the London Philharmonic as well as the west coast part of that concert tour with engagements in San Diego, Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver with members of the Czech National Orchestra. Ron is music director and conductor for the L.A. based Influence Jazz Orchestra, a 22-piece all-star Big Band. On occasion this group expands to a full 75 piece orchestra. Ron is music director and conductor for the 11-piece group Jazz Forest which is currently in studio finishing its first CD release and rehearsing in Seattle for several performances around the Northwest from Portland to Bellingham....MORE INFO!

Bruce Lofgren – Composer, Guitar

Performed with: Jazz Round Table #7 6/1/21Bio – “First, the music has to please me. Writing has always been a passionate thing for me. If a germinal idea, when it occurs, doesn’t bring some kind of heightened emotional awareness, I probably won’t follow through with it, research it or explore its possibilities. But if it does bring an emotional response, then I will want to explore it to give it a chance to show its secrets….it’s partly intellectual, partly hard work and partly excitement at the vistas around each turn.”–From an interview with Bruce Lofgren that appearedin the LA Jazz Scene, May 2001, issue No. 165, pp. 3-4, by Myrna Daniels Bruce Lofgren has composed and/or arranged and produced eight CDs which are currently available: Wind and Sand (Night Bird) – a new CD that’s just been released, Southwest Portals (Night Bird),The Bruce Lofgren Jazz Trio (Sea Breeze),Eventide (Sea Breeze), Red Shift (Sea Breeze), The Blues and Other Passions (Sea Breeze) and Heart of the Night (Sea Breeze) – all three with the BLJO, and Sky Sailor (Night Bird). Bruce Lofgren’s future career as a guitarist and composer first began to emerge when he formed his garage band the Vegas, who recorded his first composition, Ambush, when he was only 17. By the time he left the Seattle area for California in 1970, his musical experiences and accomplishments also included leading the Barons Blues Band, house band at the popular St. Michael’s Alley (a weekend dance hangout) from 1964-66; player and arranger for the locally popular Pacific Northwest Territory Band for which he wrote over fifty musical arrangements; private guitar instructor at the Al Turay Guitar Studio (1967-70); and student of big band arranging with composer/arranger Ralph Mutchler. It was also in the Pacific Northwest where Bruce discovered jazz upon finding a Tal Farlow album in a local record store and subsequently hearing the Barney Kessel Quartet play at The Cellar, a Vancouver, B.C. jazz night spot. From that point on Bruce was passsionately consumed with the language of jazz–a language of a higher plane, exciting and free like the blues, but with a much larger variety of moods and feelings. His undergrad studies earned him an A.S. from Schenectady County Community College and a B.M. (with honors) from The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. By the age of 23, he was a heavily called upon drummer in upstate NY but was feeling the tug of pursuing jazz more avidly. That was when he moved to NYC to attend Manhattan School of Music. His audition won him the prestigious President’s Award scholarship and he graduated with a masters degree in jazz performance. For the following 8 or so years, Mancini continued honing his craft while cutting his teeth at live gigs all around NYC, earning him a much deserved reputation as a trusted sideman and kick-ass band leader until a gig took him out west and he found his true home in LA. In 2006 he relocated and was immediately inducted into the, then burgeoning but now codified, LA creative music scene. Since his arrival, Mancini has truly made an indelible mark. He was celebrated as the Honoree at the 18th annual Los Angeles Jazz Vibes Summit and earlier that same year his face graced the cover of Ventana Monthly, the popular Ventura county arts magazine, which also featured him in a story about the beach community’s thriving arts scene. Rather than accept a scholarship to North Texas State, he chose a more adventurous road by joining Hawaiian pop/rock band Kalapana, which had some success on the mainland but was most popular in Japan. After playing regularly and recording on all four of Kalapana’s albums from 1975 through 1979, Paulo recorded a solo album for Japanese release on Trio records. In addition to exposing him to the Japanese jazz audience, Tats in the Rainbow gave him the opportunity to work with legendary pianist Herbie Hancock. Paulo moved to Los Angeles in 1981 and quickly established himself by playing with percussionist Ray Armondo and a local R&B outfit featuring members of Rufus. Two years later, he caught his big break when Al Jarreau hired him for his touring band. The young saxman became an integral part of the Jarreau experience while touring the world for the next decade. Paulo also gained international recognition as a result of his work on Jarreau’s famed “Live in London” release. In 1988 paulo recorded his first Major solo release One Passion on MCA records which was critically accliamed as one of the most influential recordings in contemporary Jazz. We listen to people like Miles, Scofield, Larry Goldings, Wes Montgomery, Joe Lovano, Pat Metheny, Brad Mehldau, Chick Corea, John Abercrombie, Gary Burton, Peter Bernstein, and the Beatles. All of these influences come out in the playing and the writing. We like to think we pay attention to the past and to the future.” The band also plays fresh treatments of tunes by Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Kenny Barron, Bill Evans, Joe Zawinul, Benny Golson, Thelonious Monk, Ornette Coleman, and others, plus many original compositions....MORE INFO!

Great stuff that works throughout!” – Midwest Record by Chris Spector “This is a joyous Dave Frishberg-ian occasion… His songs are pointed and hilarious… clever with a knack for taking universal first world frustrations and putting them into lyrics.” – Cadence Magazine by Robert Rusch “An amazing songwriter… he can swing vocally the same way he swings on his drums. His melodies are challenging and beautiful, while his lyrics are compelling and creative. His scat singing is one of my favorite things on this CD. Plus, while he makes you laugh with some song messages, others inspire introspection and soul-searching. Besides his astute sense of humor, Dave Tull is an extraordinary songwriter, an exceptional drummer and a stylized singer. I continue to ask myself, how can he play drums with such excellence and sing Bebop at the same time? This CD previews all of his talents in the most profound and engaging way. Enjoy.” Musical Memoirs by Dee Dee McNeil...MORE INFO!
