Welcome to our Fifth Episode! This week’s guests guitarists Pat Kelley from L.A., Joe Robinson from Nashvill via Australia, and Vinny Raniolo from New York!

We start the discussion by hearing each of their unique “origin stories” and how they got into playing and into jazz in particular.

Pat Kelley – Guitar

An integral part of the Thornton School of Music Guitar Faculty at the University of Southern California for twenty-four years, two of Pat’s books, Arpeggios for the Evolving Guitarist and Melodic Minor Guitar are part of the USC Thornton School of Music instructional series (Mel Bay Publications). Pat has also been on the faculty of the Monterey Jazz Festival Summer Jazz Camp, Guitar College Summer Guitar & Bass Camp, the University of Tulsa Summer Jazz Camp, and Interlochen Center for the Arts. A native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Pat grew up playing music with his Dad, other guitarists, singers, and bands, from the age of five. After majoring in music composition at the University of Tulsa, Pat moved to Southern California in the early 1970’s where he has recorded and toured with George Benson, Natalie Cole, David Benoit, Ronnie Laws, Hubert Laws, Tom Scott, Al Jarreau, Chick Corea, Dave Brubeck, Dave Koz, Jane Monheit, Olivia Newton John, Melissa Manchester, Burt Bacharach, Jose Feliciano, and many others. Performances with symphony orchestras include Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Houston, Atlanta, Tulsa, Denver, San Antonio, Auckland, Nashville, Toledo, and the Asia America Symphony Orchestra. While recording hundreds of commercial jingles, records, films, and television shows, Pat also worked for several years as the guitarist in house bands on the Merv Griffin, Pat Sajak, and Carol Burnett television shows. He has also written more than one hundred-fifty compositions that have been recorded for CDs, film, television, and music libraries. In 2003, Pat was inducted into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame, joining past inductees Chet Baker, Oscar Pettiford, Lester Young, Charlie Christian, and Barney Kessel....MORE INFO!

Vinny Raniolo – Guitar

Performed with: Jazz Round Table #5 – 5/4/21 Bio – As a touring guitar musician, performer, and educator, Vinny Raniolo is best known for his accompanying skills and is a very high demand rhythm guitarist. His dynamic playing has brought him to 14 countries on three continents – and still growing – having performed in some of the world’s most illustrious venues, including the Sydney Opera House in Australia, The Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, New York’s Lincoln Center and the world’s oldest indoor concert hall, Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, Italy. While keeping a busy touring schedule in a variety of musical settings, Vinny has also become a familiar figure on Public Television. Featured previously on three popular shows, including the heavily programmed Tommy Emmanuel and Friends, in Frank Vignola’s Four Generations of Guitar as the youngest generation in the lineage of jazz guitarists with veteran Bucky Pizzarelli and in the Music Gone Public series. Joe Robinson – Guitar

Performed with: Jazz Round Table #5 – 5/4/21 Bio – Joe Robinson is an Australian born virtuoso guitarist and singer-songwriter. Based in Nashville, TN since 2010, Joe has performed over 2000 concerts in 35 countries including presenting clinics at Berklee College of Music (Boston), Musicians Institute (Los Angeles), Belmont University (Nashville), performing on the the Nashville TEDX stage, and winning the Australia’s Got Talent TV Series in 2008. He has released 5 studio albums.
